Joshua Yeldham

Vogue Living Australia featured Joshua Yeldham in their recent Volume No. 2.  Once a director, Yeldham is known for an introspective and emotional connection to his work.  His “canvases” are often carved and painted, layered with wood and other material.  The texture and colors in his work seem to give them an aged presence.    His newest series of works, River Song, will be on display in Hong Kong this September.  The collection is the result of he and his wife’s struggle with infertility (they have since been blessed with two children).  Yeldham camped along the Hawkesbury River during this time, finding inspiration for the work below.
I found his work to be melancholy and yet quite engaging.  The subtle Asian influence is calming to me, somewhat reminiscent of Gustav Klimt (one of my other many favorites).  It is worth peeking at the piece in Vogue, the texture of his work is incredible, the carved wood “canvases” are hard to discern from the photographs.
