I enjoy alliteration on furniture; simple lines with intricate details. The late Andre Sornay is credited with a technique known as cloutage (“…a method of studding the perimeter of veneered furniture panels with long lines of tiny brass nails.”) Sornay’s technique was merely aesthetic; becoming his trademark touch. Otherwise unheralded outside his hometown of Lyons (a breathtaking French city on the Saone River), Sornay was overshadowed by other furniture designers of his day—particularly those in Paris. His style is described as a “merg[ing] [of] the elegance of Art Deco with the innovative material of the 1930’s and ‘40’s industrial style.” Check out the article on Sornay in the May edition of ELLE DÉCOR or click here.
